For a while when the frontend wouldn’t work on my mac, I would just copy the .mpg2 and watch it on my machine. We don’t do any after record transcoding though, just adjust the recording quality instead.

I’m not sure about other capture cards though. I know the old crappy haupauge we used to have ended up in .nuv.
